Introduction

General Electric Health Care sought to transition its data and analytics platform to the AWS cloud, aiming to migrate a large volume of data from an on-premises environment within a tight timeline.

Analyzing the Problem

With approximately 150TB of data spread across 1500 DB objects and 65,000 S3 objects, the challenge was twofold: migrating the data to the cloud efficiently and ensuring timely completion to meet project deadlines.

Initial Challenges

  • Massive volume of data requiring migration.
  • Strict timeline of 4 months for completion.
  • The complexity of migrating diverse data types to AWS S3 and Redshift.

Our Solution

We employed AWS native tools, specifically Spark on EMR, to facilitate the migration process. This approach enabled efficient data loading into S3 and subsequent transfer to Redshift, ensuring compatibility and seamless integration with the AWS cloud environment.

Key Results Achieved

  • Successful migration of 150TB of data within the 4-month timeline.
  • Seamless transition to AWS cloud infrastructure without delays.
  • Significant cost benefits were realized for the client by leveraging cloud-native migration tools.

Conclusion

By leveraging AWS technologies and employing an efficient migration strategy, General Electric Health Care successfully transitioned its data and analytics platform to the cloud. The timely completion of the migration project and the cost benefits achieved underscore the effectiveness of cloud-based solutions in addressing complex data migration challenges.
